Investigating the WRF Temperature and Precipitation Performance Sensitivity to Spatial Resolution over Central Europe

The grid size resolution effect on the annual and seasonal simulated mean, maximum minimum daily temperatures precipitation is assessed using Advanced Research Weather Forecasting model (ARW-WRF, hereafter WRF) that dynamically downscales National Centers for Environmental Prediction’s final (NCEP FNL) Operational Global Analysis data. Simulations were conducted over central Europe year 2015 36, 12 4 km resolutions. Evaluation done E-OBS Several performance metrics bias adjusted equitable threat score (BAETS) are used. Results show temperature improves when increasing spatial from 36 to km, with no significant added value further it km. Model slightly worsened while has minor effect. However, observed data in quite good agreement areas rates below 3 mm/day all three mean fraction of and/or forecast events correctly predicted (BAETS), suggests a slight modification average domain. During summer presents significantly lower BAETS skill compared rest seasons.
